Dollywood Top Ten Tips

Off the Beaten Path

The Smoky Mountain area can get CRAZY crowded at certain times during the year.

Since COVID started it seems to stay crowded almost year-round. My family is not a lover of huge crowds or traffic jams, but we do love our Tennessee mountain home so here are some spots we visit that are off the beaten path. And for bonus…they are all FREE!

Greenbrier Swimming Hole

The perfect place to escape to nature and cool your feet (or your whole body.) Located on the Cosby side of Gatlinburg, it’s a favorite of ours to escape the crowds. Here is a whole post on the area along with directions!

Bush. ’s Beans Visitor Center

I know, it might sound a little funny, but it is one of our favorite places to visit! My son loves it, and we try to stop by at least a couple times a year. The museum is FREE and interactive, with a lot for kids to do. Make sure you pick up an activity card for your kids on your way in. They can earn a free prize! Also, get your picture made with Duke. It’s free too! There is also a restaurant (very yummy) and a shop full of cute things. Here is another post with more info! And if you are already there, jump on over to Dandridge! It’s a fun little town absolutely full of history! Here is more info!

Little Greenbrier Hiking Area

This area in the Wears Valley section of the park is full of lush foliage, historical sites, hiking and not nearly as many people. Your family can spend time exploring the school, cemetery and historical cabins that can be reached by driving and hiking. We personally love the Walker Sisters Cabin Hike.

Douglas Dam

Take a trip to visit the dam, check out some local history, and maybe take a swim or have a picnic. It’s a nice side trip with a bit of a more laid-back atmosphere.

Cosby, TN

The Cosby side of the Smokies is not one to miss. It offers great hiking (Hen Wallow Falls and Mt. Cammerer are two popular ones) and camping if you want the outdoors. For awesome views from your car, drive the Foothills Parkway from Cosby to Interstate 40. And for a fun meal and shopping, visit Carvers Apple Orchard. We love the orchard in the fall when the apples are plentiful, the views are beautiful, and you can even pick up a cool pumpkin or two.

I hope this gives you some ideas of ways you can spend your Smoky Mountain vacation off the beaten path!
